This page provides some background and transparency about our organization and the various ways to get active. It’s mainly intended for current members.

Board

The board is ultimately responsible for the association’s finances and policies, and carries out various general tasks. They schedule lessons and social dances, arrange venues, carry out promotional activities, register members, arrange the finances and organize member meetings. They are also the main and trusted point of contact for any questions and issues. They support other active members and committees.

Our administrative year starts and ends on the 1st of August.

How to get active?

Normally the board is openly recruited from our members during summer / autumn and appointed at our GMA (ALV) in November/December.

Teachers

Our teachers are volunteers, recruited from our experienced members. There is a head teacher, and also a lesson coordinator within the board. The teachers meet up regularly to plan the next block and talk through any input coming from teachers and members.

Since we are a small-scale organization with volunteers rather than a professional dance school, our teachers currently receive a modest compensation of 15,- euros per hour of teaching. We may increase this in the near future.

How to get active?

Our teachers are always actively on the lookout for members with a suitable experience level who seem willing to teach. If you are interested to teach, please reach out to the teachers or the board!

DJ’s

DJing in SOL is not particularly organized at the time of writing. Several active members (teachers, ex-teachers, board members and other enthusiasts) informally arrange who will play music at our social dances. There is always room for requests and feedback, whether it is before, during, or after parties!

How to get active?

If you are interested to play music at parties, don’t hesitate to ask the board or teachers.

Social activities

We aim to organize fun, non-dance activities as well, this can range from an after-lesson drink in the city center to ice skating or visiting a christmas market. There is a budget set aside for this every year. We usually rely on enthousiastic active members to organize this.

How to get active?

You are welcome to organize a one-time event or set up an ongoing “social committee”! Please contact the board if you have any ideas and let’s make it happen.

Visiting other scenes

Visiting social dances in other cities, or even multi-day lindy hop festivals, can be a lot of fun and very rewarding. For a large part of our dancers, this is a big part of what it is all about :) Larger scenes have live music more often than we do in Enschede, which really gives a new dimension to the party.

How to join a social or festival?

For socials, people simply indicate in the Whatsapp group that they are willing to go, and usually a group will form to go by train or car. Don’t hesitate to be the first one to propose something, and for level 1: don’t hesitate to join something suggested by higher level dancers! You will have a good time.

Accounts committe

Two (or more) members are appointed, generally during the GMA, to check the work of the treasurer for quality and signs of suspicious activity, usually while being pampered with tea and cookies by the treasurer.

How to get active?

Indicate you are willing to do this one-time task before or during the GMA.
